The ancient city of Ohrid is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site and the most beautiful town in Macedonia. Located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the town is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. In its current incarnation, the town was built mostly between the 7th and 19th century. Ohrid is especially known for its churches and monasteries where lie some 800 Byzantine-era icons painted between the 11th and 14th centuries.
